Fabian Battaglini is our specialist in geopolitics and defence.

For several years, he was a member of the “Conflict Studies” Department at the Belgian Royal Military Academy, where he taught geopolitics in the Master 2’s programme in Social and Military Sciences. He also supervised several master's theses on the geo-economics of shale gas, which were awarded prizes by the Belgian Ministry of Defence. Additionally, he initiated an interdisciplinary research project bringing together his department, the Department of Economics, and the Dutch Military Academy, focusing on the economic and strategic approaches to cyber warfare.

In parallel, he taught at Webster University Leiden as part of the Master’s programme in International Relations, covering topics such as terrorism, international security institutions, and Russian politics.

He also led a research seminar on formal and experimental approaches to terrorism within the Research Master’s programme in Public Economics and Management at the University of Montpellier.

His research focuses on the economics of conflict, defence economics, and historical political economy, with a methodological approach based on game theory. In 2024, he published one of the first articles on the military implications of ecological transition in the international journal “Energy Economics”.
